After studying a foundation course followed by a three year degree in interior architecture at Brighton College of Art from 1969-1972, Peter Sayer was accepted at the Architectural Association in London but unable to get a grant and with a young family to support, he chose family in preference to career. It was his unique ability that led him to a very successful career as a Chartered Interior Architect and Designer but the inspirational catalyst has been his ability to paint with rare and genuine conviction. This fresh and vibrant artwork, launched to an appreciative audience last year has been gaining a fabulous, national response. A Day in the Life of Peter Sayer: t is often said that you cannot be creative to order, and yet ironically, Peter Sayer thinks that he responds well to the right kind of pressure. All his friends and family know that when he is painting that he really doesn’t want to be disturbed; painting is a solitary activity. “That doesn’t mean that I feel lonely, just absorbed totally into the subject matter.” Having spent the last 30 years designing retail environments for the public, which involves surveying literally thousands of building premises and, having built a lot of them as well, he feels uniquely placed to look differently at them now. Whilst painting Peter Sayer finds himself thinking about the people who built the buildings, laid the stones forming the pathways, the joiners who made the doors and windows, the owners and why they choose to decorate some and not other parts of the buildings. He will become part of the space for a while, completely transported into the imaginary lives of others and when the music stops he has to change the CD to indulge in his favourite pastimes. These include cooking; going to the theatre, museums and galleries, travelling and gardening but most of all, Peter Sayer enjoys spending time with his wife and children. Ideas and Inspirations Peter Sayer, born of deep seated conviction, is driven by an acute sense of space and place. The juxtaposition of detail in the built environment that is of itself merely detail, but when combined, defines the uniqueness that we, as human beings, love to call dynamic, unusual, quirky, even quaint and atmospheric. He loves glimpses of a view into a space that can’t quite be reached. Something ethereal that makes you want to take that extra step forward to find out more. It’s his inquisitive nature that drives him to want to capture this in his artwork. Peter Sayer invites the viewer to step into the picture and experience all the small subtleties that make these places both permanent and transiting.
