Paul Hess was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1961. He went to art college in Sydney and then worked as a
graphic designer and Art Director for various companies both in Sydney and London from 1981 to 1991. He
has worked as a freelance Art Director and illustrator since then.
He had four animal word books published by De Agostini in 1996. He had a version of Jack and the
Beanstalk, retold by Josephine Poole published by MacDonald Young Books in 1997.
He won the Association of Illustrators Award for Best Unpublished Illustration in 1992 and won the
Sydney Morning Herald Award for Best Portrait in a Photographic Competition in 1978.
He says he has no hobbies; he is not interested in theme parks, violently energetic outdoor pursuits eg
bungy jumping, sky diving or water skiing, or bad food. But he is interested in everything else!
He remembers Hans Christian Andersen’s tales, illustrated by Jiri Trnka, as the most memorable book of
his childhood. One of his favourite memories is of sandy, sunburnt picnics when he was little.
He is not married and currently lives in Somerset.
Paul first book for Andersen Press is The Great Castle of Marshmangle, written by Malachy Doyle and a
second book by them titles Hungry, Hungry, Hungry will be published in Autumn 2000. |
