John Mackie was born in Glasgow in 1953, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Dr David Donaldson. Graduating in 1976 he was, in the eyes of his mentor," The most talented student of the year".

This early promise has been confirmed many times over, with sell-out exhibition following sell-out exhibition, attracting collectors and critics from Glasgow to Detroit. It was from his travel scholarship from the Scottish Arts Council during the late seventies that he gained such recognition in the United States, which continues to this day.

His work is always developing, but always demonstrate his unique sense of light and shade, while his extravagant palette conveys the heat and atmosphere of the part of the world he depicts.

 John is quoted as saying "To me painting is about expressing yourself through light and colour".
